42nd death anniversary of Rear Admiral Mahbub Ali is to be observed on Aug 6

The 42nd death anniversary of Rear Admiral Mahbub Ali Khan, former Chief of Bangladesh Navy and former Minister for Communications and Agriculture, is being observed on Thursday, August 6.

On this occasion, various social, political, and professional organizations are recalling his career, patriotism, and national contributions.

Born on November 3, 1934, at Birahimpur in South Surma, Sylhet, Mahbub Ali Khan joined the Pakistan Navy as a cadet in 1952 and underwent training at the Combined Services Academy in Quetta.

Later, after completing his training at the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth in the United Kingdom, he served on various British Navy ships. He received a special award in the UK in 1963 in recognition of his professional excellence.

Following the independence of Bangladesh, he returned to the country in 1973 and played a vital role in developing the newly formed Bangladesh Navy. He served as the first Bengali Commandant of the Chittagong Marine Academy.

Under his leadership in 1976, Bangladesh Navy's first major warship, BNS Omar Farooq, was brought to the country from the UK.

He was appointed Chief of Bangladesh Navy in 1979 and was promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral in 1980. Under his leadership, organizational restructuring of the Navy, improvement of training systems, formulation of legal frameworks, and various modernization initiatives were implemented. He also played a crucial role in safeguarding Bangladesh's sovereignty in its maritime boundaries.

Alongside his military duties, Mahbub Ali Khan held key administrative responsibilities. He served as Chairman of the Armed Forces Pay and Pension Committee, Chairman of the Administrative Reorganization Implementation Council, and was closely involved in introducing the Upazila system.

Moreover, he served as the Minister for Posts and Telecommunications, Communications, and Agriculture.

During his tenure as Communications Minister, construction work began on several vital infrastructure projects in the Sylhet region, including the Shahjalal Bridge, Lamakazi Bridge, and Sheola Bridge. As Agriculture Minister, he took various initiatives to boost agricultural production, foster rural development, and strengthen food security.

On August 5, 1984, he fell ill after supervising the rescue operations following a Biman Bangladesh Airlines plane crash. He passed away the following day, August 6, while undergoing treatment at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH). He was 49 at the time of his death.

Speakers at various programmes organized to mark his death anniversary remembered his honesty, professionalism, leadership qualities, and contributions to national development. They remarked that Rear Admiral Mahbub Ali Khan's role in modernizing the Bangladesh Navy and enhancing administrative efficiency will remain memorable in the nation's history.
