Jamaat chief says ‘another revolution is coming’, urges people to prepare

Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman on Wednesday said “another revolution is coming” and urged people to be prepared, alleging that the government was repeating the mistakes of past authoritarian rule.

Speaking as the chief guest at an 11-party alliance rally marking the second anniversary of the July Uprising at the south gate of the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque, he warned that the government’s “downfall” would be inevitable if it ignored public sentiment.

“It seems another revolution is imminent. I urge the countrymen to prepare for it,” he said, adding that Jamaat would not compromise on what he described as protecting the people’s mandate.

Shafiqur alleged that the government was resorting to oppression and authoritarian practices, saying threats of imprisonment or execution would not deter his party.

“If sacrifice is needed for the country’s freedom, we are ready,” he said.

The Jamaat chief also claimed that fear had returned to educational institutions, alleging that a culture of intimidation was re-emerging. He called on students, teachers and staff to resist injustice wherever it occurs.

Criticising the recent gas price hike, he alleged that an artificial crisis had been created before the increase, calling it a deception against the public.

He also accused those involved in past corruption of continuing the same practices and urged people to unite against what he described as fascism, injustice and the deprivation of rights.

The rally, chaired by Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis Ameer Mamunul Haque, was attended by leaders of the 11-party alliance.
