Youth found hanging from tree on woman’s wedding day in Sirajganj

Police recovered the hanging body of a 22-year-old youth from an orchard in Kamarkhanda upazila of Sirajganj on Thursday, the day a woman he reportedly loved was getting married.

The deceased was identified as Rakib Pramanik, son of Sohrab Pramanik of Jotibari village.

According to locals, Rakib had made several posts on Facebook before his death, saying he was distressed over the woman’s marriage and asking people to forgive him. The posts drew attention in the area.

Local residents later found Rakib’s body in a mango orchard in Jotibari and informed police. Police went to the spot and recovered the body.

Nasir Uddin, a resident of Jotibari, said Rakib was polite by nature. He reportedly developed a relationship with a young woman while studying at a local school. He later went abroad but returned to Bangladesh after failing to find the expected work.

Nasir said Rakib had recently become emotionally distressed after learning about the woman’s marriage.

Contacted by phone, the woman’s maternal aunt, whose number was mentioned in one of Rakib’s Facebook posts, said she did not know whether the two had been in a relationship.

“I only heard about Rakib today. I do not live here. I came yesterday and then heard that Mabiya’s wedding was today. I also do not know how he got my phone number,” she said.

Kamarkhanda Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Hashmat Ali said police went to the scene after receiving the information and recovered the body.

“Legal procedures have been initiated. The actual cause of the incident will be confirmed after the investigation,” he said.
