Teesta flooding disrupts movement of 2,000 families in Lalmonirhat

Sudden flooding by the Teesta River has inundated several low-lying areas of Dahagram Union in Patgram upazila of Lalmonirhat, disrupting the movement of around 2,000 families after parts of a regional road collapsed.

The water level rose rapidly on Wednesday evening following heavy rain and reached 13cm above the danger level at the barrage point, flooding parts of Wards 1, 2 and 3 of Dahagram Union.

However, by 6pm on Thursday (August 6), the water level had fallen to 9cm below the danger level.

Locals said the water rose by around two to three feet within a few hours, flooding about 500 acres of Aman paddy. The Upazila Agriculture Extension Department, however, said no major crop damage was reported as the water receded within a few hours.

Floodwaters damaged the road on both sides of a bridge over the Sakoa River in Sristhiyarpar. Around 20 feet of the regional road connecting Sristhiyarpar with Angarpota and Patgram also collapsed, leaving a hole about 10 feet deep.

The damage has disrupted movement in Dangapara, Mistripara, Pradhanpara, Olerpara and Sakoyapara, affecting around 2,000 families.

Asadul Mia, a resident of Ward 3, said the damaged road posed a risk of accidents and needed immediate repairs.

Patgram Upazila Nirbahi Officer Tanvir Hossain said he had spoken to the Roads and Highways Department’s executive engineer after learning about the collapse.

“He assured us that repairs would be carried out quickly. Hopefully, communication will be restored soon,” he said.
