RAB has detained the main accused in the murder case filed over death of a tourist in a parasailing accident in Darianagar beach in Cox’s Bazar.
The arrestee is Md. Farid, 45, son of Abdul Hai of South Baharchhara under Ward No. 11 of Cox's Bazar municipality.
Assistant Director of RAB-15 A.M. Farooq confirmed the matter on Friday (August 7).
He said a joint operational team of RAB-15 Cox's Bazar and RAB-4 Dhaka conducted a special drive based on secret information. They arrested Farid from Azad Mini Market in the Madhya Pirerbagh area under Mirpur Model Police Station in Dhaka around 9:30PM on Thursday (August 6).
RAB sources said tourist Akshar Shouvik Roy, 31, from Khulna, went parasailing run by Farid at Darianagar beach in Cox's Bazar Sadar upazila around 1:40PM on August 1.
Due to safety negligence, the rope of the parasail snapped mid-air, causing him to fall into the sea. As there was no immediate rescue arrangement at the spot, he was rescued late and taken to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital. On-duty doctors there declared him dead.
Following the incident, the victim's sister filed a murder case at Cox's Bazar Sadar Model Police Station.
RAB-15 Assistant Director A.M. Farooq further said the accused went into hiding after the incident. RAB intensified intelligence surveillance to arrest them.
Later, based on information technology and intelligence inputs, the team confirmed Farid's location in Dhaka's Mirpur area and launched the joint operation.
The arrested accused has been handed over to Cox's Bazar Sadar Model Police Station for further legal action, the RAB official added.
