Dr Shafiq says allowing AL into politics would be heinous crime 

BAGERHAT, Aug 7: Bringing the Awami League back into active politics would be a “heinous crime,” Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman said on Friday.

He made the remarks while speaking at an exchange of views with journalists at the Bagerhat Circuit House auditorium on Friday.

“Awami League should no longer return to politics. The party that established a reign of terror in the country, was involved in enforced disappearances and killings of numerous people and killed the country’s politics,” Dr Shafiqur Rahman said.

The Jamaat chief alleged that the Awami League had yet to express remorse for its past actions.

“So far, Awami League has not apologised. There is not even the slightest sign of remorse. They continue to provoke people while staying across the border. An entire generation stood against them. Bringing them back into politics merely to increase the strength of a political alliance would be wrong and a heinous crime,” he said.

Dr Shafiqur further said the party wanted to return to politics without expressing any remorse.

“Our demand is that the government should take responsibility for bringing Sheikh Hasina back to the country and putting her on trial,” he said.

He said maintaining peace and public order was the responsibility of the government.

“We are certainly cooperating inside Parliament wherever cooperation is necessary. And where opposition is necessary, we are opposing,” the Jamaat ameer said. Regarding the July Charter, Dr Shafiqur Rahman said the political divide over the issue still remained.

Bagerhat district Jamaat Ameer Maulana Rezaul Karim chaired the meeting.

Jamaat Central Executive Council Member Principal Mohammad Izzat Ullah MP, Bagerhat-1 MP Maulana Md Mashiur Rahman also attended the meeting.
