Trump gets power to impose 100% tariffs on Russian energy buyers

The US Senate has passed a bill giving President Donald Trump the authority to impose tariffs of up to 100 percent on the five largest buyers of Russian oil and natural gas, potentially including India and China.
The bill, passed 86-11, is named after late Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, who had pushed for tougher sanctions against Russia over the Ukraine war.
If approved by the House of Representatives, the measure would allow tariffs of up to 100 percent on Russia’s top five energy buyers. India, China, Azerbaijan, Hungary and Slovakia are currently among the leading importers.
The bill also proposes tougher sanctions on Russian President Vladimir Putin, senior officials, financial institutions, energy projects and oil tankers allegedly used to evade sanctions.
The House is expected to consider the bill when its new session begins on August 31.
