1 killed, 5 injured in Barishal Bus-Mahindra crash

One person was killed and five others, including a student of the University of Barishal (BU), were injured in a head-on collision between a passenger bus and a three-wheeler Mahindra in Barishal city on Sunday afternoon.
The accident occurred around 4pm on the slope near the Rupatali-Dapdapia Bridge on the Barishal-Kuakata highway.
The deceased was a passenger of the Mahindra. His identity could not be known immediately.
The injured include Mahindra driver and four passengers. Among them, BU student **Yasir Arafat**, a student of the 2023-24 academic session, sustained serious injuries. He is being prepared to be shifted to Dhaka for better treatment.
Police Sub-Inspector Zubayer, who was present at the scene, said the Mahindra was carrying five passengers from Patuakhali towards Rupatali in Barishal city. When it reached the slope near the toll plaza of Dapdapia Bridge, it collided head-on with a Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) bus travelling from Rupatali towards Kuakata with passengers on board.
The Mahindra driver and five passengers were injured in the collision.
Local residents and police rescued the injured and took them to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal, where they were admitted to the surgery department. One of the passengers later died while undergoing treatment.
Al Mamun Ul Islam, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Model Police Station, said six injured people were taken to the hospital, where one died during treatment. The identity of the deceased has not yet been established.
He added that Yasir Arafat's condition was critical and preparations were underway to send him to Dhaka for advanced treatment.
Jewel Chandra Shil, ward master of Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital, said six people injured in the road accident had been admitted and were receiving treatment.
Following the accident, traffic on both sides of the Barishal-Kuakata highway slowed down, causing a temporary traffic congestion.
Police were working at the scene to restore normal traffic movement, the OC said, adding that legal action would be taken over the incident.
