North Korea has decided to send at least another 50,000 troops to Russia to fight alongside Russian forces in the war in Ukraine, claimed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

According to Zelensky, the troops will be deployed in various regions of Russia. In a post on the social media platform X on Sunday (August 9).
However, the Ukrainian president did not provide details about the source of this information. He said that fragments of several North Korean-made missiles had recently been found on Ukrainian territory.
According to Zelensky, North Korea has been producing various types of weapons, including missiles, on its own territory using licenses and necessary equipment obtained from Russia.
Zelensky also said that Ukraine plans to expand defense cooperation with South Korea in response to North Korea’s military assistance to Russia in the Russia-Ukraine war. He said Ukraine is working to receive assistance from South Korea in the area of air defense systems. At the same time, he added that the two countries are ready to cooperate in other military sectors, including drone production.
In June 2024, Russian President Vladimir Putin visited North Korea. During the visit, he signed a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Under the agreement, if either country comes under attack by an external force, the other country will provide assistance.
After the treaty was signed, North Korea began sending troops to Russia. Ukraine and Western countries claim that thousands of North Korean troops have been deployed to fight on behalf of Russia.
Meanwhile, earlier this August, an official from Ukraine’s military intelligence service told Reuters that, in addition to regular troops, North Korea had sent a missile unit to Russia to support Russian forces. The unit included 120 ballistic missiles and six launchers. The official said the unit had been deployed in western Russia.
