US Ambassador to Israel denounced calling the settler siege committed against Palestinians “terror”.
Settlers near Nablus have blockaded Palestinian homes, including one owned by a US citizen, blocking access to food and other supplies.
The US Ambassador, a staunch supporter of the West Bank settlements, refused to call what happened to the Palestinians as an act of “terror”
In contrast, Mick Huckabee, the US Ambassador in Jerusalem, refers to the incident as an “act of terror”, calling it “disgusting”, and criticized the US response to the incident.
This reaction is striking, because Huckabee was an evangelical Christian pastor who embraced Jewish settlement of the West Bank and rejected the idea of a Palestinian state.
The Israeli military sent in forces on Wednesday to remove the tent, but the settlers defiantly remained at the site with their blankets. The army promised to send in a new battalion to try to impose order.
Ever since the attack against Isreal on October 7th, 2023 by Hamas from the Gaza Strip, violence against Palestinians by Israeli settlers in the West Bank has increased dramatically.
Though illegal under international law, there are reportedly more than 500,000 Israelis living in settlements in the West Bank, among some three million Palestinians in the territory.
