Afghanistan qualify for World Cup alongside Bangladesh

Afghanistan secured a three-wicket victory over Ireland in the third ODI to take the lead in the series and confirm their place in the ODI World Cup to be held in South Africa.

Their victory also confirmed which eight teams will occupy the top nine ranking spots by the September 30 cut-off date.

After September 30, the top eight-ranked teams will qualify directly for the World Cup. However, as hosts South Africa are among the top eight, the team ranked ninth will also qualify for the tournament.

Bangladesh currently occupy the final qualifying spot. They will join defending champions Australia, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, England, Afghanistan, South Africa and Zimbabwe.

The West Indies, currently ranked 10th, have two ODIs remaining before the cut-off date. However, even if they win both matches against India, they have no chance of moving into ninth place.

As a result, the West Indies will have to play in the qualifiers again in February next year. It will be the third consecutive time they have had to go through the qualifying tournament.

The West Indies failed to qualify directly for the 2023 World Cup and had to play in the qualifiers. They finished fifth in the Super Six stage and were eliminated.

The winner of the qualifiers will advance directly to the second round of the 2027 World Cup. The second-, third- and fourth-placed teams will then compete in a stage called the Super Series.

The top team from the three-team Super Series will advance to the second round of the World Cup.
