Education and Primary and Mass Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon has said the Education Reform Initiative (ERI) will play a key role in building a prosperous Bangladesh.

“ERI will identify weaknesses in the education system, conduct research to address them and help build the Bangladesh of tomorrow,” he said.

The minister made the remarks at a public lecture titled “Education for Building a Prosperous Economy: Skills, Language Competency and Global Mobility”, organised by ERI at the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council auditorium in Dhaka on Tuesday.

Milon said ERI was launched with the objective of improving the quality of education and generating research-based solutions to the challenges facing the country's education sector.

He said the organisation would work sincerely to help implement Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's vision of building a better Bangladesh.

“Education must be improved further if we want to take the country forward,” the minister said, adding that the government was placing particular emphasis on cross-border education as well as Technical And Vocational Education and Training (TVET).

Regarding the recruitment of teachers through managing committees, Milon said no decision had yet been taken on the issue.

“No decision has been made to recruit teachers through managing committees. The matter was only discussed at the preliminary stage,” he said.

National Professor Dr Mahbub Ullah chaired the public lecture, while Prime Minister's Adviser on Finance and Planning Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir attended it as a special guest.

Professor M Niaz Asadullah of the University of Dhaka presented the keynote paper.

Markopolo AI CEO Tasfia Tasnim, Bdjobs CEO AKM Fahim Mashroor, UNESCO Representative to Bangladesh Dr Susan Vize and Cultural Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in Bangladesh Li Shaopeng took part in the discussion.

Later, the minister attended a session titled “Reconstructing Fragile Economy and Achieving SDGs” at the national conference on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre.
