Jamaat protests in Rangpur over Fakhrul's remark

Rangpur leaders and acitivists of Jamaat-e-Islami brought out a protest procession and held rally on Wednesday (August 12) - objecting remarks made by LGRD Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

Organised by Rangpur City Jamaat-e-Islami, the procession started from the Public Library ground at noon. It marched through City Bazar, Paira Chhatar, Jahaz Company More, Press Club, and Grand Hotel More before concluding at Shapla Chhatar, where a brief rally was held.

Rangpur City Jamaat Amir ATM Azam Khan presided over the rally, while Secretary KM Anwarul Haque Kajol moderated it. District Jamaat Secretary Maulana Enamul Haq and other local leaders also spoke.

Speaking at the rally, ATM Azam Khan said the minister's statement implied that Rangpur lagged behind in development because locals voted for the Jatiya Party or Jamaat-e-Islami instead of the BNP.

He stated that such remarks undermine the political awareness and constitutional rights of the people of Rangpur.

"Which party to vote for is a democratic right of the people. Linking regional development with political choice is unacceptable. Ensuring equitable development across all regions is the duty of the government," Azam Khan added.

He demanded the implementation of key projects, including the Teesta Mega Project, along with industrialization, educational, and healthcare development to eliminate regional discrimination in Rangpur.

Speakers at the rally called on Mirza Fakhrul to withdraw his statement. Earlier on Tuesday night, 11 Jamaat MPs expressed outrage over the statement at a press conference.

On August 9, during an event at Rangpur Shilpakala Academy, Mirza Fakhrul commented on the political choices of Rangpur residents, saying, "People of Rangpur are always backward. Why? Because we do not understand what is right. When the BNP government comes, you support Jatiya Party, and when the BNP government comes, you support Jamaat. How will you get development then?"
