Gholam Sarwar’s eighth death anniversary

The eighth death anniversary of veteran journalist and founding editor of Samakal Gholam Sarwar is being observed today.


Sarwar died on August 13, 2018, at the age of 75 while undergoing treatment in Singapore. He began his journalism career in 1962 and went on to work for leading newspapers including Sangbad and Ittefaq. He later became the founding editor of Jugantor and Samakal, and the founding president of the Editors’ Council of Bangladesh.


Sarwar also actively participated in the Liberation War in 1971 in his hometown of Banaripara, Barishal.


For his contribution to journalism, he received the Ekushey Padak in 2014, followed by lifetime achievement awards from the Cultural Journalists’ Forum of Bangladesh in 2016 and the Ataus Samad Memorial Trust in 2017.


He was also a writer, with notable books including Rongin BalloonSampadoker JabanbandiAmiyo GorolAmar Joto Kotha and Swapno Beche Thak.


The Samakal family will pay tribute to Sarwar at his grave at Mirpur Intellectuals’ Cemetery in Dhaka today, followed by prayers. Similar programmes, including Quran recitation, a milad and food distribution among orphans, will be held in his hometown of Banaripara.
