DCU to seek Seven Colleges students’ views on academic migration

The authorities of Dhaka Central University (DCU) will seek written opinions from students of the seven government colleges currently affiliated with Dhaka University regarding their academic migration to the newly established university.

Students from the 2021-22, 2022-23 and 2023-24 academic sessions have been asked to submit their opinions. The final decision on migration will be based on the majority view of the students.

According to a notice signed by DCU Registrar Md Shahidur Rahman and issued on Wednesday night, the opinion collection process will run from August 16 to 20.

Students will have to visit the principal’s office of their respective colleges and submit their views using a prescribed form.

The notice said different opinions and reactions have emerged among students regarding their migration to the relevant academic programmes of DCU. The university authorities decided to collect written opinions to understand students’ actual views and expectations and ensure a transparent and participatory decision-making process.

The authorities said the opinions received would be reviewed with due importance before a final decision is taken based on the majority view.

The university also sought cooperation from students, principals, teachers and others concerned to ensure the process is completed smoothly.

The seven colleges currently conduct their classes, examinations and other academic activities under Dhaka University. Following longstanding complaints of discrimination, the government established Dhaka Central University by bringing the seven colleges under a separate university framework. The DCU ordinance was subsequently passed by Parliament in April this year.
