Separate courts in Sirajganj, Munshiganj and Khulna districts in three days sentenced seven persons to life imprisonment for separate rape and murder incidents.
SIRAJGANJ: Judge Laila Sharmin of the Additional Sessions Judge’s Court-1 of Sirajganj on Thursday noon has sentenced four people to life imprisonment and fined each Tk 20,000, in default, to serve more two months in prison for murdering Tariqul Islam in the district in 2009.
However, among the convicted, Abdul Majid has already died. The other convicted are Abdul Mannan and Hira Mia of Pangasi Village in Raiganj Upazila and Rafiqul Islam and Abdul Majid of the Boalia Char area of Salanga PS in the district. Out of the 14 accused in the case, the court acquitted the other 10 as the charges against them were not proven.
Additional Public Prosecutor (APP) of the court Shamsujjoha Shahanshah said, Sakhawat Hossain's son Tariqul Islam was beaten to death on August 30, 2009 due to a land dispute. In this incident, the deceased's brother Abdul Monnaf filed a case with Raiganj PS accusing 14 people. Later, the investigation officer submitted the charge sheet to the court on January 6, 2010. After a long hearing and taking evidence, the court declared the verdict.
MUNSHIGANJ: Judge Shariful Alam Bhuiyan of the Land Survey Appeal Tribunal of the Munshiganj District and Sessions Judge's Court on Wednesday noon sentenced a man named Sumon Hossain alias Sumon Sheikh to life imprisonment and also fined him Tk 20,000, in default, to serve another year in prison for murdering Kulsum Begum, 35, in Sreenagar Upazila of the district. The verdict was announced after the testimony and evidence of 19 witnesses.
According to the case source, Kulsum Begum of Purba Hasargaon went missing on January 17, 2021. Her skeleton was recovered from a wasteland in the same area after 19 days. Later, the family members identified the skeleton as that of Kulsum.
In this incident, his son Kamrul Hasan Ayan filed a case with Sreenagar PS. Later the case was transferred to PBI Munshiganj.
According to PBI's investigation, Suman took Tk 6 lakh at different times for sending Kulsum's son Kamrul abroad. Later, Suman called Kulsum to the uncultivated land on January 17 and killed her with a sharp blade due to a dispute over taking another Tk 1.20 lakh and paying the instalments of the loan. Later the body was hidden under a pile of grass.
Kamrul Hasan Ayan, the son of the victim, said, “We expected the execution of the accused. However, we respect the court's verdict.”
KHULNA: Judge Md Manjurul Imam of the Khulna Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal on Tuesday sentenced a 21-year-old man to life imprisonment for killing his grandmother, reportedly over drug money and dispute over property.
The convict, Md Khalil Morol alias Irfan, son of Md Kamrul Morol of Srikonthapur Uttarpara Village in Paikgachha Upazila and a first-year honours student at BL College in Khulna, was also fined Tk 20,000, in default of which he will have to serve another six months in jail.
According to court sources, Irfan’s mother Fatema Khatun had allegedly been pressuring the victim, Nur Jahan alias Khano Bibi, to transfer much of her property to her grandson. Irfan became addicted to drugs and often assaulted his grandmother for money to buy drugs. As his mother allegedly gave him drug money, the grandmother protested and she was subjected to abuse. At one point, Irfan’s father handed him over to police, but his mother later secured his release.
Irfan allegedly vandalised household belongings in the morning of December 28, 2020 for drug money. Taking advantage of the absence of others at home at around 1:30pm, Irfan allegedly chopped his grandmother with a sharp dao and fled the scene. She died on the spot.
The victim’s daughter, Fuli Begum, filed a case with the court the same day. Investigating officer Inspector (Operations) Debashish Das submitted a charge sheet against Irfan on February 25, 2021. The court of Senior District and Sessions Judge Mashiur Rahman Chowdhury accepted the charges on February 10, 2022. The case was later transferred to the Khulna Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal for disposal.
