Runner dies during marathon in Narayanganj

A runner named Tipu Sultan, 40, died after falling ill while participating in a marathon in Sonargaon, Narayanganj, on Friday this morning. 

The incident occurred around 6:00 am in the Baluadighirpar area of Sonargaon municipality.

Tipu Sultan was the son of the late Razzak Mia from Kathkhal village in Mithamoin upazila of Kishoreganj. He worked as a personal assistant to businessman Ashraf Pradhan in the Mograpara area of Sonargaon.

According to the organisers, the 7.5-kilometre race began at 6:00 am from Aminpur field in Panam Nagar. After covering about half the distance, Tipu Sultan suddenly fell ill in the Baluadighirpar area. 

He was initially taken to Sonargaon Seba General Hospital with the assistance of the event's medical team. Later, he was taken to Madanpur Al Baraka Hospital for better treatment, where doctors declared him dead. He reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest.

Shim ul Bhuiya, chief organiser of the Sonargaon 7.5K Run 2026, said around 600 runners from across the country participated in the event, including Tipu Sultan.

Azharul Islam Mannan, MP from Narayanganj-3 and chief guest of the 7.5-kilometre race, along with the organising committee, also expressed condolences over his death.
