Dhaka to introduce zone-based rules for battery-run rickshaws

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) is moving to introduce a zone-based system for operating rickshaws, including battery-powered ones, as part of efforts to bring the capital’s transport system under control.
DSCC administrator Bir Muktijoddha Abdus Salam said Dhaka would be divided into several zones, with rickshaws restricted to operating within designated areas.
“Rickshaws from one area will be restricted from entering another to prevent traffic congestion. Depending on the situation, restrictions may also be imposed based on specific days and roads.”
Abdus Salam said the authorities must identify the root causes of the rickshaw problem and find a solution. 
He noted that battery-powered rickshaws are currently operating across Dhaka in an unregulated manner, including on the wrong side of roads. Many drivers do not follow traffic laws or maintain proper road discipline, further worsening congestion on various city streets.

He said the influx of autorickshaws into Dhaka from different parts of the country has increased since August 5. The authorities plan to bring these vehicles under a specific regulatory framework by dividing the city into several zones.
“For example, a rickshaw from Demra will in no way be allowed to go to New Market. We will divide the city into zones and may also allocate specific days for them.”
“Some roads will also be designated for rickshaw movement, while on certain roads they will be completely prohibited,” Abdus Salam added.
According to the DSCC administrator, no one will be allowed to operate a rickshaw in Dhaka without a licence. Rickshaws entering Dhaka from Keraniganj or crossing the river from Demra to operate in other areas will not be permitted.
Similarly, rickshaws from the Dhaka North City Corporation area will not be allowed to operate freely in DSCC areas.
“We want to divide the city into zones and bring the entire system under a structured framework. This will take some time, and we seek cooperation from the media and everyone concerned,” Abdus Salam said.
