‘Don’t criticise us, support us,’ Neymar urges Santos fans

Santos forward Neymar has urged supporters to back the team rather than criticise them after helping the Brazilian club secure a 2-1 comeback victory over Ecuadorian side Macara in the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana round of 16.

Neymar failed to score in the match but played a key role in Santos’ victory, providing assists for both of the team’s goals.

Despite his two assists, the Brazil all-time leading scorer came under criticism during the match. In the first half, Neymar misplaced a pass and was subsequently booed by some supporters in the stands.

Speaking to ESPN Brasil after the game, Neymar said he understood the fans’ frustration but called for a more positive approach.

“We were a goal down at that moment. I understand that it is difficult for the supporters. But if you come to the stadium with a negative mentality, it is better to stay at home,” Neymar said.

“I told that supporter, ‘Don’t criticise us, support us.’ There were still 60 minutes left to play. Encourage the team,” he added.

The result gives Santos a narrow advantage heading into the second leg, with Neymar’s creative contribution proving decisive despite his failure to get on the scoresheet.
