Police have arrested two people, including Md. Golam Muktadir, general secretary of Raiganj Press Club and member secretary of the municipal Swechchhasebak Dal, in connection with an attack and vandalism involving the vehicle of Sirajganj-3 (Raiganj-Tarash) MP VP Aynul Haque.
The arrests were confirmed on Sunday night (August 16) by Saiful Islam Khan, additional superintendent of police (Raiganj Circle) in Sirajganj.
According to police, Golam Muktadir is named as accused No. 8 in the case. He was arrested during a drive conducted by the District Detective Branch (DB).
On the same day, at around 4:45pm, police conducted a raid at Cafe Fast Food in front of Raiganj Dhangara Women’s Degree College and arrested another accused, identified as Alamgir Hossain.
The incident took place around 6pm on Saturday (August 15) in the Dhangara Bazar area of Raiganj, when the MP’s vehicle came under attack and was vandalised.
A case was filed at Raiganj Police Station on Saturday night by local BNP leader Shamimul Hasan. The case names 15 individuals as accused, along with 30 to 40 unidentified people.
MP Aynul Haque blamed activists of Jamaat-e-Islami, Islami Chhatra Shibir and the National Citizen Party (NCP) for the attack. However, both Jamaat and the NCP denied the allegations and called for an impartial investigation into the incident.
