A Dhaka tribunal on Monday sentenced a man to death for killing his wife by pouring hot water on her over dowry 20 years ago.
Judge Munsi Md Mashiur Rahman of the Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 pronounced the verdict against Md Sanaullah and also fined him Tk 100,000.
Nine other accused were acquitted as the charges against them could not be proved, said Ershad Alam George, public prosecutor of the tribunal.
The acquitted are Ali Hossain, Mintu Mia, Nur Islam, Shahidullah, Md Kalu, Shahidul, Begum, Renu Begum and A Khalek.
Sanaullah, who was in custody, was produced before the court when the verdict was delivered. After the verdict, he was sent back to jail with a warrant for execution of the sentence.
According to the case statement, Sanaullah married Rubina Akter Pinky on November 28, 2005. He allegedly subjected her to physical and mental torture demanding dowry.
On May 2, 2006, he poured hot water on Pinky when she failed to meet his demand. Neighbours rescued her following her screams and admitted her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where she later died while undergoing treatment.
Pinky’s father filed a case with Kamrangirchar Police Station. Following an investigation, sub-inspector Md Golam Mostafa submitted a charge sheet against Sanaullah on October 20, 2006, recommending that the other accused be discharged.
The complainant filed a no-confidence petition against the recommendation. The court subsequently took cognisance of the charges against all the accused and began the trial, recording statements of nine witnesses.
