BGB seizes Tk 8,300cr smuggled goods in Sarail region

 
KULAURA, MOULVIBAZAR, Aug 17:  The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized smuggled goods worth around Tk 8,300 crore, along with firearms and explosives, during operations along the northeastern border between January 1 and August 10 this year.

Lieutenant Colonel Sarker Asif Mahmud, Commander of the Sreemangal Battalion, disclosed the information at a media briefing on Monday.

He said the BGB’s Sarail region is responsible for 1,204 kilometres of border, where 13 units under four sectors operate through 211 Border Outposts (BOPs) to prevent smuggling and protect the border.
The force conducts regular patrols and special operations based on intelligence to prevent the smuggling of drugs, firearms, people and other illegal goods, he said.

During the operations, BGB personnel seized large quantities of drugs and other contraband and recovered four pistols, six air guns, five pipe guns and a one-shooter gun.

They also recovered 40 rounds of ammunition, 18.33kg of high explosives, 117 detonators and 30 metres of detonator wire.

Lt Col Sarker said the BGB is also working to stop illegal extraction of sand and stones and assisting people affected by natural disasters.

He said the force remains committed to protecting national sovereignty, maintaining peace along the border, preventing the smuggling of drugs and arms, conserving natural resources and building a drug-free society.

The BGB’s operations will continue in coordination with the local administration, he added.
