NARAYANGANJ, Aug 17: Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) Administrator Advocate Sakhawat Hossain Khan said that students can play an important role in preventing mosquito-borne deadly diseases like dengue and chikungunya; the spread of these diseases can be prevented by keeping one's own homes, yards, and surrounding environments clean and tidy.
He made these remarks on Monday afternoon as the chief guest at a school-based cleanliness campaign organised by the NCC at Mizmizi Painadi Rekmat Ali High School in Ward No. 1 of the city corporation. The campaign was aimed at raising awareness among students about preventing dengue and other mosquito-borne diseases.
Addressing the students, he said, "Everyone has a family, a house, and a yard. It is everyone's responsibility to protect themselves and their family members from dengue. We must be vigilant to ensure that water does not accumulate anywhere around the house. At the same time, we must also raise awareness among family members and neighbours."
He further said that due to carelessness at times, water accumulates in coconut shells, discarded containers, or other places, creating breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes. Therefore, he emphasised the prompt removal of stagnant water and keeping the environment clean.
The NCC Administrator also said, "Household waste must not be thrown just anywhere; it must be disposed of in designated places. School classrooms, playgrounds, and surrounding areas must also be kept clean. Students must play a leading role in building a clean environment."
Handing out guidelines to students for dengue prevention, he said that wearing full-sleeved clothing, taking necessary measures against mosquitoes, and maintaining regular cleanliness can significantly reduce the risk.
Expressing optimism about the students' future, Sakhawat Hossain Khan said, "You are the future of the nation. You must study attentively and respect your parents and elders. Future leaders will emerge from today's students. From among you, one day, important responsible individuals and leaders of the country will arise."
Also present at the event were officials from the NCC, leaders of the school's managing committee, teachers, students, and BNP activists.
As part of the programme, the students pledged to raise awareness about dengue prevention and build a clean environment.
