A lecturer at Nandangachhi College in Rajshahi’s Charghat upazila has been temporarily suspended for posting a message on Facebook expressing grief and respect for Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
The decision was taken at an emergency meeting of the college’s governing body on Monday (August 17) afternoon.
The suspended lecturer, Soheli Akter, teaches Home Economics at Nandangachhi College. On Saturday (August 15), the death anniversary of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, she posted a photo card on her Facebook account featuring his image and the words “Deepest sorrow.” In the caption, she wrote, “Humble respect.”
Speaking to reporters, Soheli Akter said she was unaware of the suspension. “I don’t know whether I have been temporarily suspended. I took leave on Sunday. I don’t know what happened today (Monday). I have nothing to say,” she said.
According to sources, Soheli had gone to the college on Sunday (August 16) and verbally sought leave from the principal. On the same day, her Facebook post drew the attention of students and local residents.
Later that night, the college unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) announced a protest march for Monday morning, demanding action against the lecturer. JCD leaders and activists gathered at the college in the morning and demanded her permanent dismissal and legal action.
The college governing body subsequently held an emergency meeting and decided to temporarily suspend her.
Sahedur Rahman Sahed, convener of Nandangachhi College Chhatra Dal, alleged that Soheli Akter had been trying to promote the ideology of the Awami League at the college. He also claimed that her father had served as a vice-president of the district Awami League.
“She posted on Facebook on the occasion of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s death anniversary. We have demanded her permanent dismissal,” Sahed said.
College Principal Wahedul Islam told reporters that Soheli Akter, as an employee of the republic, could not make what he described as an “anti-state” post on Facebook.
“Therefore, she has been temporarily suspended to maintain discipline at the college,” he said.
Saiful Islam, president of the college governing body and general secretary of the Charghat Nimpara Union BNP, said the decision to temporarily suspend Soheli Akter was taken unanimously.
“She has not been served a show-cause notice yet. However, a decision regarding this will also be taken,” he said.
