Bangladesh Coast Guard Director General Rear Admiral Md Ziaul Haque has said all-out efforts are underway to arrest drug kingpins involved in the trade and smuggling of narcotics.
He made the remarks at a press conference held at Bangladesh Coast Guard headquarters on Tuesday (August 18).
Earlier, the Bangladesh Coast Guard and the Department of Shipping signed the MoU to enhance mutual cooperation in maritime security, environmental protection and rescue operations at sea.
Rear Admiral Md Ziaul Haque and Department of Shipping Director General Commodore Md Shafiul Bari signed the agreement on behalf of their respective organisations.
The Coast Guard has long been working to ensure security in the country’s maritime areas. Asked whether stronger measures would be taken to curb drug trafficking through the maritime border with Myanmar, amid continued smuggling despite drug seizure operations, the Coast Guard director general said drug abuse is a major problem for Bangladesh.
''We all know that drugs are a major problem for Bangladesh. What I have observed as a problem is that, for some reason, demand for drugs has increased in the country. Where there is demand, there will be supply. In the past two years, we have seized around 15 million yaba tablets alone as part of efforts to control drugs. A large number of people involved in the trade have also been arrested.''
