Bangladesh is set to undertake a major overhaul of its prison system, with plans to transform the existing jail administration into a more modern, humane, transparent and technology-driven institution.
Inspector General of Prisons Brigadier General Syed Md. Motaher Hossain said on Tuesday that the government has initiated steps to rename the Bangladesh Jail Service as “Custodial and Correctional Service Bangladesh”, reflecting a broader shift from detention-focused prison management to rehabilitation and reintegration.
Speaking at a press conference at the Department of Prisons, the Prisons IG said policy work on the proposed new name is already underway, alongside efforts to modernise prison laws and regulations.
As part of the reform drive, Munshiganj District Jail has introduced as a cashless prison to improve transparency and reduce the scope for financial irregularities. Prison headquarters and divisional administrative structures have also been reorganised to improve operational efficiency.
The government has approved 1,899 new posts to address manpower shortages, while another 1,500 posts have been sought.
