Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmad stated that the government has taken initiatives to amend Article 70 of the Constitution.
He added that future presidential elections will take place under the revised provision.
The Home Minister made these remarks while speaking to journalists at Parliament House on Thursday (August 20).
Under Article 70 of the current Constitution, a Member of Parliament loses their parliamentary seat if they vote against their party's decision. This provision has long been a subject of political and constitutional debate. The topic re-emerged as a major point of discussion during the recent presidential election.
According to political analysts, potential changes to Article 70 could grant lawmakers greater freedom in casting their votes. This shift would add a new dimension to vital constitutional processes, including the election of the President.
The Home Minister noted that after nearly 35 years, a constitutionally competitive presidential election is taking place in the country with an opposition candidate contesting the post.
Highlighting the importance of such competition for a democratic system, he said this trend should continue in the future. He noted that through such elections, citizens will witness the practical reflection of democratic practices.
Regarding constitutional amendments, the minister mentioned that the opposition has not yet joined the committee formed for this purpose. However, the government has kept the amendment of Article 70 within the formal process and will implement it in the future.
He clearly stated that subsequent presidential elections will be held in accordance with the provisions of the amended Article 70.
