A Dhaka court on Thursday placed Syed Monalisa Islam, wife of former state minister Farhad Hossain, on a three-day remand in a murder case filed over the death of businessman Abdul Wadud during the July 2024 uprising.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Awlad Hossain Muhammad Jonaid passed the order after the DB’s Ramna zonal team sought a seven-day remand for Monalisa, a central vice-president of the Jubo Mohila League.

Defence lawyer Tarikul Islam opposed the remand plea and sought her bail, while the prosecution supported the investigation agency’s request.

According to the case documents, Wadud was shot dead in front of Gate No. 1 of New Market in Dhaka on July 19, 2024. His brother-in-law, Abdur Rahman, later filed the murder case against 130 people, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and former road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader.

Monalisa was arrested from a house on Eskaton Road in Dhaka in February last year. Her lawyer said she had secured bail in nine other cases and was shown arrested in the New Market murder case immediately before her release.
