Dhaka University (DU) administration held its first preparatory meeting to begin the process of organising the next election to the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU), whose current term is set to expire in mid-September.
Meeting was held at 3pm on Thursday (August 20) at the Abdul Matin Virtual Classroom, chaired by DU vice-chancellor Professor Dr ABM Obaidul Islam.
Meeting participant said the discussion was an initial ‘icebreaking’ session on how to proceed with the election. Since organising DUCSU election is a lengthy process involving multiple stakeholders, the administration will hold further consultations before reaching specific decisions.
As an initial step, provosts of the university’s residential halls have been verbally instructed to seek the views of active student organisations, with formal instructions expected later.
A provost, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the administration discussed learning from previous election experiences and avoiding earlier mistakes and controversies. The meeting also considered possible procedures for ensuring a transparent election by taking into account observations, opinions and objections from all stakeholders.
However, no separate allocation has so far been made in the university’s annual budget for the upcoming Ducsu election. The issue was not discussed in detail at the meeting, the provost said.
Among those attending were pro-vice-chancellor (administration) Prof Dr Mohammed Almujaddade Alfasane, pro-vice-chancellor (academic) Prof Dr Abdus Salam, treasurer Prof Dr M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, chief election commissioner of the 2025 DUCSU election Prof Dr Mohammad Jasim Uddin, and provosts of various residential halls.
