Chiefs of the Bangladesh Army, Navy, and Air Force have arrived at Bangabhaban to attend the swearing-in ceremony of newly elected President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
The chiefs of the three services entered Bangabhaban around 6:25 PM on Friday.
They are Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman, Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Khondkar Misbah ul Azim, and Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmood Khan.
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will assume office as the new President of the country through this swearing-in ceremony. Under the constitution, the President also serves as the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces.
Security has been tightened around Bangabhaban and adjacent areas ahead of the oath-taking ceremony. Government officials, political leaders, military and civil officials, and invited dignitaries are arriving at Bangabhaban to attend the event.
Earlier on Thursday, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was elected President at the National Parliament, securing 255 votes. His rival candidate, Colonel (Retd) Oli Ahmad of the 11-party alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami, received 88 votes.
On the same day, the Election Commission issued a gazette notification declaring Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as the 23rd President of the country.
The post fell vacant following the resignation of President Md Sahabuddin on July 24. Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed subsequently took over as Acting President under the constitution, while Deputy Speaker Kayser Kamal assumed the role of Acting Speaker.
The tenure of the Acting President and Acting Speaker will end with the swearing-in of Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
