Turkey has sought an international arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the alleged interception of a Gaza-bound aid flotilla and detention of its activists, Turkish Justice Minister Akin Gurlek said.
Gurlek said the Justice Ministry had asked the Interior Ministry to seek Interpol red notices for Netanyahu and another Israeli suspect, Afek Moskovitch. The request is part of an ongoing judicial case over the incident in international waters.
Arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Moskovitch were issued on July 14 on charges including genocide, crimes against humanity, aggravated deprivation of liberty, intentional injury, torture, property damage, aggravated robbery and hijacking of transport vehicles, according to Gurlek.
The case concerns the Global Sumud Flotilla, which carried humanitarian aid to Gaza. Israeli forces intercepted the flotilla in May and detained its activists before they were deported.
Turkey has been a strong critic of Israel’s military operations in Gaza and has previously issued domestic arrest warrants against Netanyahu over the war. Israel denies allegations of genocide and other violations.
An Interpol red notice is a request to law enforcement agencies worldwide to locate and provisionally arrest a person pending extradition proceedings. Interpol reviews such requests before deciding whether to issue a notice.
