BSF rescues 10 Bangladeshis after Padma boat capsizes

The Border Security Force (BSF) has rescued 10 Bangladeshis after a dinghy capsized in the Padma River in Chapainawabganj Sadar upazila on Saturday afternoon.

The incident occurred around 5:30 PM in the Narayanpur area, said Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).

Narayanpur Union Parishad Chairman Md Nazir Hossain said a group of 11 or 12 people was travelling by dinghy from Bakhar Ali Ghat towards the Joharpur Camp and Ward No. 8 area when the boat capsized.

One person was rescued after swimming to safety, while the remaining 10 or 11 people drifted into Indian territory and were rescued by members of the BSF's Khandaha camp, he said. Women, men and children were among those on the boat.

Lieutenant Colonel Kazi Mostafizur Rahman, commanding officer of Chapainawabganj Battalion (53 BGB), said the BSF had rescued 10 people and that BGB was in contact with its Indian counterpart.

“Efforts are underway to bring them back to Bangladesh by tonight,” he said.
