Students in Sakhipur have set an example of compassion by donating money they had saved for sweets to help a classmate’s mother, who is suffering from cancer. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has now provided Tk 2 lakh for her treatment.
On Saturday, Liberation War Affairs Minister and local MP Advocate Ahmed Azam Khan handed over a Tk 2 lakh cheque from the prime minister to the family of Laili Begum at an event at Kalidas Koltan Bidyaniketan in Sakhipur upazila.
The minister said another Tk 3 lakh would be provided soon.
Laili Begum is currently undergoing treatment at Khwaja Yunus Ali Medical College and Hospital in Sirajganj. She is the mother of Naim Shikdar, an SSC graduate of 2026.
Her family had been struggling to continue her cancer treatment due to financial difficulties.
On August 16, Naim’s classmates decided not to buy sweets after passing the SSC examination and instead donated Tk 20,000 from their savings for his mother’s treatment. Teachers and other students later contributed another Tk 20,000.
The students’ initiative was reported in the media, drawing the prime minister’s attention.
Ahmed Azam Khan said the prime minister was moved by the students’ gesture and directed the authorities to ensure necessary assistance for Laili Begum’s treatment.
As part of the assistance, Tk 2 lakh was handed over on Saturday, while the remaining Tk 3 lakh will be provided soon, he said.
Sakhipur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Ashraful Alam presided over the event. Assistant Superintendent of Police Md Al Mamun of the Basail-Sakhipur Circle, Sakhipur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Murad Hossain, teachers, students and local residents were also present.
