A woman died while undergoing treatment after allegedly being tortured by her husband over a dowry demand in Kalai upazila of Joypurhat, police said. The accused husband, Mehdi Hasan Shapla, 35, has been arrested in connection with the case.
The deceased, Masuda Begum, 27, was allegedly confined inside her home and tortured while loud music was played. She was rescued in critical condition on August 15 after a neighbour heard groaning sounds coming from the house. She was initially taken to Kalai Upazila Health Complex and later transferred to Joypurhat 400-Bed General Hospital. As her condition deteriorated, she was sent to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura, where she died at around 7:30pm on Friday, August 21.
According to the case statement and court documents, Shapla allegedly demanded Tk 500,000 from Masuda as dowry on August 14 while their 13-year-old daughter was staying at her uncle’s house. After Masuda refused to pay, he allegedly locked her inside the house and played loud music. The complaint further alleged that he tied her hands and feet with a rope and assaulted her with an iron plier, causing serious injuries to her head and breaking two upper front teeth. He also allegedly beat her with a bamboo stick, burned her hands and back with a heated iron rod, and applied chilli powder and salt to her injuries.
At one point, Masuda lost consciousness, and Shapla allegedly assumed that she had died. He then locked the house and fled, according to the complaint. The following afternoon, neighbour Rezaul Karim heard groaning from inside the house. He alerted a local Union Parishad member and Masuda’s brother, Bashir Mondal, among others. They broke open the lock and rescued her in critical condition.
Police said they went to the scene after receiving a call to the national emergency service 999 on August 15. Masuda was subsequently taken to hospital for treatment.
Masuda’s brother Bashir Mondal filed a case at the Joypurhat Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal on August 17. After recording the complainant’s statement, the court directed the officer-in-charge of Kalai Police Station to register the case and take necessary legal action. The case was later registered under relevant provisions of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, 2000.
Shapla, son of late Abdus Samad of Haranjo village in Kalai upazila, was arrested from his home and produced before the Joypurhat court on Saturday afternoon, police said. Masuda was the daughter of late Dilbar Mondal of Darsha Kha Para village in Tulsiganga Union of Khetlal upazila.
Kalai Police Station Officer-in-Charge Rafiqul Islam confirmed the arrest and said police had rescued Masuda in critical condition after receiving the 999 call. He said the accused was arrested following an operation and was sent to court on Saturday.
