The BRTA chairman says the authority will consider their demands within the existing legal framework.

Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) Chairman Mohammad Habibur Rahman has said the authority will hold talks with sleeper bus owners over their demands, but there will be no compromise on compliance with existing laws.

He made the remarks while speaking to reporters after receiving a memorandum from the Bangladesh Sleeper AC Bus Owners Association at the BRTA headquarters in Banani on Sunday afternoon.

“We have received the memorandum. There is no disagreement over the law. We are committed to enforcing it,” Habibur said.

He said the law applies equally to everyone and the authority would discuss the owners’ concerns before taking any decision.

“We will sit with them and listen to their views on sleeper buses and any proposed modifications,” he said.

The chairman said the authority would take measures as far as legally possible, but “there is certainly no scope for doing anything in violation of the law”.

Earlier, the Bangladesh Sleeper AC Bus Owners Association submitted the memorandum demanding withdrawal of the decision to stop sleeper bus services and formulation of specific guidelines for the sector.

The association also called for technical and safety standards based on international practices instead of shutting down sleeper bus operations.

The owners said hundreds of crores of taka had been invested in the sector and thousands of drivers, helpers, supervisors and mechanics depended on it for their livelihoods.

They urged the authorities to formulate an effective regulatory framework to allow sleeper buses to operate.
