Typhoon Narra causes flooding in China and Vietnam, displacing thousands

Flooding has begun in southern China’s Guangxi province and northern Vietnam following the impact of Typhoon Narra.

So far, 54,000 people in Guangxi province and 4,300 families in northern Vietnam have been forced to leave their homes and move to shelters due to the flooding.

Typhoon Narra, which developed from a low-pressure system in the Beibu Gulf off the coasts of southern China and northern Vietnam, made landfall on the northern Vietnamese coast early Monday.

However, heavy rainfall had already begun on Sunday, the day before the storm made landfall, in China’s Guangxi province and Vietnam’s northern mountainous provinces of Lang Son and Cao Bang. Vietnam’s weather service said Lang Son and Cao Bang received 300 millimeters of rainfall over 24 hours on Sunday.

Flooding has also occurred in Vietnam’s tourist city of Quang Ninh. Vietnamese government officials said that nearly 55,000 households have been left without electricity due to the storm and heavy rains, while crops on 10,000 hectares of farmland have been destroyed.

Meanwhile, heavy rain caused water levels in 15 rivers in China’s southern Guangxi province to rise above danger levels. Flooding has already begun in the city of Chongzuo.

In both China and Vietnam, rescue teams are continuing their efforts to evacuate and assist people affected by the storm and flooding.
