Shirin Akhtar, mother of slain madrasa student Nusrat Jahan Rafi, expressed satisfaction with the High Court verdict on Monday while alleging threats to her family’s safety.

Speaking to reporters at her home in the Charchandia area of Sonagazi Upazila in Feni, she sought security from the Prime Minister and authorities.

Shirin Akhtar said many tried to label Nusrat’s murder as a suicide initially, but the verdict reaffirmed that it was indeed a murder. She expressed satisfaction with the outcome but alleged that threats are being made to burn down their house.

The High Court bench of Justice Bhishmadev Chakrabortty and Justice KM Rasheduzzaman Raja delivered the verdict on Monday after a hearing lasting over two hours.

The court upheld the death sentences of former principal SM Siraj-ud-Doula and Shahadat Hossain Shamim. It commuted the death sentences of four convicts - Umme Sultana Popy, Mohammad Nuruddin, Shahadat Hossain Javed, and Iftekhar Hossain Rana - to life imprisonment.

Meanwhile, 10 convicts were acquitted. They are Mohammad Shamim, Ruhul Amin, Afsar Uddin, Councillor Maksud Alam, Hafez Abdul Kader, Abdur Rahim Sharif, Imran Hossain Mamun, Mohiuddin Shakil, and Kamrun Nahar Moni.

The murder occurred in April 2019 after Nusrat refused to withdraw a sexual harassment case filed against Siraj-ud-Doula. Miscreants tied her up on the roof of the madrasa and set her on fire on April 6. She died on April 10 at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Following her death, her elder brother, Mahmudul Hasan Noman, filed a case. On October 24, 2019, the Feni Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal sentenced all 16 accused to death, a judgment that was subsequently appealed in the High Court.
