No concession on implementing referendum verdict: Jamaat

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar said the party and the 11-party alliance would make “no concession whatsoever” on implementing the referendum verdict.
He said, "70 percent of voters backed the “Yes” option and that implementing the people’s verdict was currently the country’s most important issue. “If Parliament fails, Jamaat will return to the people,” he said.
Parwar made the remarks at a press briefing on Monday (August 24), following a meeting between Jamaat leaders and editors of leading national newspapers at the official residence of the Leader of the Opposition.
He said, "Jamaat wants to promote a “constructive” and “justice-based” opposition role, supporting government initiatives that serve the public interest while opposing harmful policies through parliamentary and democratic means."
The party also alleged that opposition lawmakers were being treated unfairly in development allocations and parliamentary proceedings. It raised concerns over electricity and gas shortages, rising prices of essential goods and the rights of expatriate Bangladeshis.
On the referendum, Parwar accused the government of delaying implementation of the verdict under the “July Charter.” He said Jamaat would not compromise on the issue and urged the media to help inform the public about the party’s position.
Rejecting the government’s claim that Jamaat’s street programs had no basis, Parwar said the referendum verdict was now the country’s main political issue.
The 11-party alliance also announced a long march and vehicle convoy from Dhaka’s Shapla Chattar toward Chattogram at 7 a.m. on the 5th, aimed at demanding implementation of the referendum verdict and people’s rights.
Jamaat leaders and editors of several leading newspapers attended the meeting.
