Trawler sinks in Bay, 11 fishermen rescued, 2 missing

A fishing trawler sank in the Bay of Bengal while returning to shore after fishing, leaving two fishermen missing and 11 others rescued alive.

The incident involving the FB Jannat-Junayed trawler occurred around 8am on Tuesday, about 25 kilometres from Kuakata, amid rough weather.

Taltali Upazila Nirbahi Officer Atish Sarkar confirmed the incident around 7:30pm.

The missing fishermen have been identified as Md Nabi Hossain, 45, of Nishanbaria, and Md Rakibul, 19, of Barabagi Union in Taltali.

According to local sources, the trawler, jointly owned by Md Al-Amin and Golam Rabbani of Taltali, left for the sea on Saturday night with 13 fishermen.

After completing their fishing, the fishermen began returning to shore as the sea became rough. The trawler later sank after being hit by strong waves.

Fishermen from another trawler rescued 11 of the fishermen who were found floating in the sea. The remaining two are still missing.

“Eleven fishermen have been rescued alive and a search operation is underway for the other two,” Atish Sarkar said.

He added that the sea remains rough due to adverse weather conditions.
