From UN to London: Abdul Muhit gets key diplomatic assignment

Mohammad Abdul Muhit, former Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations in New York and former Foreign Secretary, has been appointed as Bangladesh’s new High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.
He has been appointed to the post on a two-year contractual basis. He is currently serving as the Rector of the Foreign Service Academy.
The Ministry of Public Administration issued a notification regarding the appointment on Monday (August 24).
According to the notification, Abdul Muhit’s unavailed post-retirement leave and related benefits will remain suspended. He has been appointed on the condition that he relinquish any other profession, business, or employment with any government, semi-government, private institution or organization. Other terms and conditions of his appointment will be determined through a contract.
Three Decades of Diplomatic Experience
A member of the 11th batch of the BCS (Foreign Affairs) cadre, Mohammad Abdul Muhit has had a long and distinguished diplomatic career. He has served in key missions in New York, Vienna, Washington, the Middle East and Europe.
As a professional diplomat, Abdul Muhit served at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as well as in various Bangladesh missions in the United States, Italy, Qatar and Kuwait.
His first appointment as an ambassador was to Denmark. He later served as Bangladesh’s ambassador to Austria. He also served as Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and various international organizations.
After taking charge as Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in 2022, Mohammad Abdul Muhit played an important role in multilateral diplomacy. During this period, he served as President of the UN Peacebuilding Commission and the Executive Board of UN Women, as well as Vice-President of the UNDP, UNFPA and UNOPS.
He has experience working on various global issues, including climate change, sustainable development, peacebuilding, geopolitical divisions, protracted conflicts and artificial intelligence.
Why Abdul Muhit for the London Mission
According to sources at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, after retiring in December 2024, Mohammad Abdul Muhit served as Rector of the Foreign Service Academy on a contractual appointment during the tenure of the interim government.
He also played an important role in the campaign for Bangladesh’s candidate for President of the 81st United Nations General Assembly. During the short campaign, he worked actively alongside Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury.
The government considers the Bangladesh High Commission in London one of the country’s most important diplomatic missions. A large number of Bangladeshis live in the United Kingdom. Officials believe Abdul Muhit’s extensive diplomatic experience will be valuable in protecting the interests of expatriate Bangladeshis and strengthening bilateral relations, as well as political and economic ties between the two countries.
Former University of Dhaka Student
Mohammad Abdul Muhit obtained his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Dhaka. During his long diplomatic career, he held important responsibilities in both bilateral relations and UN-centered multilateral diplomacy.
Officials concerned view his continued appointment to important state responsibilities after retirement, and his selection to lead a crucial mission like the London High Commission, as a reflection of the government’s confidence in his extensive diplomatic experience.
