Netanyahu got his Iran war, but maybe not his desired result

JERUSALEM, Aug 25: After decades of urging the United States to confront Iran, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu finally saw Washington join Israel in war against the Islamic republic. But six months of inconclusive hostilities have left Israel facing difficult strategic questions, with Iran weakened but still standing.

The conflict began with major Israeli strikes, including the killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Israel also targeted Iran’s nuclear infrastructure and key personnel. Yet analysts say its military successes have not translated into a clear strategic victory.

“It’s a colossal failure of Israeli strategy regarding Iran,” said Danny Citrinowicz, a former Israeli intelligence analyst now with Tel Aviv’s Institute for National Security Studies. “Yes, we had operational achievements, but strategically we’ve failed.”

The biggest uncertainty has been the shifting approach of US President Donald Trump. After joining Israel in the conflict, Trump called for a ceasefire in April and pushed for negotiations, while later returning to economic pressure and authorising further strikes.

Israel now faces a dilemma over Iran’s nuclear programme. Khamenei had been seen as cautious about pursuing a nuclear weapon. His removal, however, could strengthen arguments inside Iran for developing one as a deterrent against future attacks.

Citrinowicz said Israel must choose between accepting a nuclear agreement that could strengthen Iran or continuing efforts to weaken Tehran while increasing the risk of nuclear proliferation."AFP
