Indians call for tougher punishment for Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal

Indian cricket fans and former players have expressed strong dissatisfaction over what they consider a lenient punishment handed to opener Yashasvi Jaiswal for a serious on-field incident during the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo.
Jaiswal was fined 25 percent of his match fee after he allegedly struck Sri Lankan bowler Asitha Fernando with his helmet following his dismissal.
Former India cricketer and commentator Sanjay Manjrekar, along with former Test batter Cheteshwar Pujara, criticised the decision, saying such behaviour should not be treated lightly.
In a social media post on Wednesday, Manjrekar wrote, “Dear ICC and BCCI, with Vaibhav for India and now Jaiswal, if you let this kind of behaviour off so easily, you are effectively teaching them to repeat it. This is not good for the game and, more importantly, for their future.”
Two months ago, Vaibhav was involved in an argument with opposition players after being dismissed in the final of a tri-series against Sri Lanka A. He was subsequently fined 50 percent of his match fee.
Pujara also expressed disappointment over Jaiswal’s punishment. Speaking during commentary, he said the incident was “not a very good sight” and stressed that players must learn to control their emotions.
“Anger can happen. I know he was disappointed after getting out. But showing anger while talking to the opposition is not acceptable. Players moving towards each other and getting into physical confrontation is not desirable in any way,” Pujara said.
The criticism has sparked renewed debate over the need for stricter disciplinary measures for on-field misconduct in international cricket.
