Don on five-day remand over Salman Shah murder

A Dhaka on Thursday placed Ashraful Haque, alias Don, on five-day remand, who was earlier arrested in connection with actor Salman Shah murder case.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Jewel Rana passed the order after a hearing on Thursday.

The CID said Don needed to be interrogated to uncover the circumstances surrounding Salman Shah’s death and identify other people allegedly involved in the killing.

Don was arrested by immigration police at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on August 9 despite a travel ban. He was later handed over to the CID and sent to jail. His bail petitions were rejected by the CMM Court on August 12 and a sessions court on August 25.

Salman Shah, whose real name was Chowdhury Mohammad Shahriar Emon, died on September 6, 1996. His father initially filed an unnatural death case, which was later sought to be converted into a murder case.

The CID’s 1997 final report concluded that the actor had died by suicide. However, on October 20 last year, a Dhaka sessions court accepted a revision petition and ordered that the case be treated as a murder case.

Salman’s maternal uncle Mohammad Alamgir subsequently filed the murder case with Ramna Police Station, naming 11 people, including Salman’s wife Samira Haque, businessman and former film producer Aziz Mohammad Bhai, Don and several others. They have been charged under Sections 302 and 34 of the Penal Code.

The court has fixed August 30 for submission of the investigation report.
