A microbus carrying cannabis fell into a pond while trying to flee police in Kasba upazila of Brahmanbaria early Friday. Police later recovered the vehicle and nine sacks of cannabis from the pond, but could not arrest the suspected smugglers.

The incident occurred in the Khidirpur area of Binaulti Union in the morning.

Police said they launched an operation on the Syedabad-Nayanpur road based on a tip-off about a large consignment of Indian cannabis being smuggled. When police signalled a black microbus to stop, the driver sped away, prompting a chase.

The microbus then entered the Andirpar-Monkashair road. At Khidirpur village, the driver lost control and the vehicle plunged into a pond.

The driver and a suspected smuggler managed to escape by swimming away. Cannabis packets also floated to the surface after the vehicle fell into the water.

Police later brought in a crane and recovered the microbus, bearing Dhaka Metro-Cha 19-0740, along with nine sacks of cannabis.

Kasba Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ali Mohammad Rashed confirmed the incident, saying the vehicle fell into the pond while trying to escape during the police operation.
