A shopping mall was vandalised and looted after the second funeral prayer of Shakil Islam, member secretary of Gurudaspur municipal unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, in Natore on Tuesday night.

The incident occurred at Rush Urbanie Mega Shopping Mall in Chanchkoir Bazar on October 27. Videos of the incident have gone viral on social media.

Tension ran high during the funeral as mourners demanded justice for Shakil’s killing. A section of attendees chanted “fake, fake” slogans when Natore-4 MP Md Abdul Aziz began speaking. The MP later announced Tk 20 lakh in compensation for the victim’s family.

After the funeral, attackers vandalised and looted the mall’s ground and first floors before fleeing as police arrived.

Locals alleged that the mall’s owner, US expatriate Russell Hossain, was close to Nuruzzaman Mintu, the MP’s eldest son, who was arrested in connection with Shakil’s murder. However, the suspected motive behind the attack remains unconfirmed.

Shakil was injured in an attack by armed assailants in Chanchkoir Bazarpara on October 14. He died on October 26 after 12 days of treatment.

Additional Superintendent of Police Iftekhar Alam said extra police had been deployed in Gurudaspur and investigations were underway. He added that legal action would be taken against those involved in unlawful activities.
