Open-book exam sparks attack on two journalists in Meherpur

Two journalists were allegedly assaulted and had their mobile phones taken while they were filming an open-book exam at Kazipur Degree College in Gangni upazila of Meherpur on Friday.
The injured journalists are Nagorik Television’s Meherpur district correspondent Rabbi Ahmed and Khabarer Kagoj’s district correspondent Tarek Hossain.
They alleged that the incident occurred during the Bangladesh Open University’s first-year BA/BSS English first paper examination at the college.
Rabbi said they went to the examination centre after receiving information that candidates were being allowed to sit the exam with books in exchange for Tk500. They found several candidates taking the exam with books open.
When they began filming the matter, several college teachers, including Moniruzzaman Biplob, allegedly attacked them.
Tarek alleged that two teachers behaved aggressively when the journalists asked about the open-book examination. They were later assaulted, while two mobile phones used for filming and a boom microphone belonging to Nagorik Television were allegedly taken from them.
He also alleged that the journalists were confined to a room but later managed to leave. A written complaint has been filed with Gangni Police Station over the incident.
Gangni Police Station Officer-in-Charge Muhaddid Morshed Chowdhury said the allegation was being treated with utmost importance.
“The complaint will be investigated thoroughly. We will examine who was involved, the reason for the attack and whether the journalists’ phones and other equipment were taken. Legal action will be taken against anyone found involved,” he said.
