Saudi Arabia says no change in policy on normalising ties with Israel

Saudi Arabia has reaffirmed that it will not establish diplomatic relations with Israel unless an independent Palestinian state is established with East Jerusalem as its capital, according to a Saudi government source.

The statement comes after US President Donald Trump reportedly linked a proposed US-Saudi civilian nuclear cooperation agreement to Riyadh normalising relations with Israel and joining the Abraham Accords. The Trump administration has said the agreement will not take effect unless Saudi Arabia joins the accords.

Citing The Wall Street Journal, Middle East Monitor reported that the Trump administration has submitted the civilian nuclear cooperation agreement with Saudi Arabia to the US Congress for review. A US administration source said Trump’s position on linking the deal to Saudi-Israeli normalisation had not changed.

However, a Saudi source told Israel’s Channel 12 that Riyadh’s policy on establishing diplomatic ties with Israel remains unchanged and described the kingdom’s position as “clear and firm.”

According to the source, Saudi Arabia will not establish diplomatic relations with Israel until a sovereign Palestinian state is established along the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The Saudi source also said the kingdom’s civilian nuclear programme is part of a long-term strategic partnership between Saudi Arabia and the United States and should not be linked to diplomatic normalisation with Israel.
