Kaharol entrepreneur successful in dairy farming

KAHAROL, DINAJPUR, Aug 28: Leaving a private-sector job in Dhaka behind, Mir Mohsin Chowdhury Mamun has built a successful cattle and buffalo farm in Kaharole Upazila of Dinajpur, proving that a salaried job is not the only path to success.

Mamun started his farm, Prithvi Dairy Farm, in 2018 with just three cows at Club Morr in Ramchandrapur Union. After years of hard work and perseverance, the farm now has 96 cattle, including 26 local cows and 70 buffaloes.

Mamun holds bachelor's and master's degrees in economics from Dinajpur Government College and LLB and LLM degrees from Dhaka International University.

He said he decided to establish the farm after dreaming of becoming self-employed instead of continuing to pursue a job.

The farm is operated using natural and traditional methods. The cattle are fed Napier grass, bran and other natural feed, while the owners say no harmful injections or artificial methods are used in rearing them.

Eight educated young people currently work at the farm in different shifts. The farm environment is kept clean and hygienic, according to those involved.

The improved-breed buffaloes have attracted particular attention. People interested in livestock reportedly visit the farm from different areas to see the animals and learn about the farming methods.

Every year, Mamun raises the cattle and buffaloes and prepares them for sale at higher market prices. Pure milk produced at the farm is also sold in local markets.

Local residents said Mamun's success in raising cattle through traditional methods was commendable and could inspire young people to start their own businesses.

Mamun said, "It is possible to succeed by doing something independently instead of running after jobs. I want young people in our area to come forward and try to build something of their own."

He also said such initiatives could help reduce unemployment among young people.

According to Mamun, he began the farm after leaving his job at a private company in Dhaka. What started with three cows has gradually grown into a farm with 96 cows and buffaloes through sustained effort.

The farm is approved by the Department of Livestock Services.

Dr Md Abu Sarfaraz Hossain, upazila livestock officer, said they regularly visit Mamun's farm and provide necessary guidance.
"The cattle and buffaloes at his farm are raised on natural feed. It is a positive example of livestock farming," he said.
