288 National University students face punishment for exam irregularities

A total of 288 students have faced disciplinary action for allegedly adopting unfair means, including cheating, and violating examination rules during the 2024 Honours third-year examinations of National University.

Of them, the examinations of 216 students have been cancelled. The remaining students have also been barred from appearing in National University examinations for periods ranging from one to four years.

University administration sources confirmed the information on Sunday.

The decisions were taken at a meeting of the Examination Discipline Committee after reviewing the students’ answer scripts, written explanations and evidence of cheating. The committee imposed the penalties in accordance with the nature of the offences and the university’s examination regulations.

According to university sources, the students were identified based on complaints submitted by officials in charge of examination centres, examiners, invigilators and chief examiners at various colleges across the country.

Of the 288 students, 55 have been barred from taking National University examinations for one year in addition to having their examinations cancelled. Fourteen have been barred for three years, while three have been barred for four years.

The examinations of 208 students charged under clause ‘Gha’ were cancelled. The same penalty was imposed on seven students under clause ‘Ga’ and one under clause ‘Ka’.

Ten students under clause ‘Nga’, seven under ‘Chha’, three under ‘O’, one under ‘Jha’ and one under clause ‘2’ had their examinations cancelled and were barred from taking examinations for one year.

The examinations of 13 students under clause ‘Dha’ and one under ‘Da’ were cancelled, and they were barred from examinations for three years. Three students�"one each under clauses ‘Na’, ‘Da’ and ‘Tha’�"were barred for four years in addition to having their examinations cancelled.

No specific clause was mentioned in the cases of 33 students. Of them, 29 were barred from examinations for one year in addition to having their examinations cancelled, while the examinations of the remaining four were cancelled.

The university administration said disciplinary measures were taken after reviewing allegations of unfair means and violations of examination rules in line with the recommendations of the Examination Discipline Committee.
