Jamaat boycotts parliamentary committee meeting over human rights commission bill

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami boycotted a meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs on Sunday in protest against the proposed National Human Rights Commission Bill.

Jamaat parliamentary party spokesperson Najibur Rahman announced the boycott after the bill was placed before the committee for review at the meeting held at the Jatiya Sangsad.

Explaining the decision, Najibur Rahman said the controversial bill was inconsistent with international conventions and Bangladesh’s international commitments.

He said the committee had been given only two working days to submit its report, leaving no scope to consult human rights activists and international organisations on the proposed legislation.

He also alleged that although the government had pledged to enact a stronger law after repealing the previous ordinance, the proposed bill would further weaken the commission.

Najibur further alleged that the bill would limit the commission’s power to conduct independent investigations into human rights violations allegedly committed by law enforcement agencies.

He said Jamaat would continue its programmes and protests against the proposed legislation.
